Prom is starting all around the country and prom photos are super important to seniors!  This session below shows how you can incorporate prom sessions either into a senior session or set up a day to do prom minis for your clients.

“With this session, I collaborated with one of my past senior clients to try out a studio prom shoot, a casual winter theme and a new makeup artist,” said Carol Jean of Full Life Photos.  “It was a fun way to get some creative juices flowing.”

I think these are great for advertising any prom sessions Carol Jean might want to do when prom season hits!  Great job Carol Jean!  Thanks for sharing your work with Seniorologie!

I was inspired to do a winter session when I found this awesome tree area with beautiful winter sunset light nearby. Then, I found this perfectly divine vintage chandelier that gave me a “light bulb” moment for something to try in my studio. I decided to combine the two ideas into this one session.

Where did this photo shoot take place?
This session took place in my home studio and in a nearby tree area close to my house.

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
Maddie had this awesome sparkling, silver/violet prom dress, so it was the inspiration for the studio shoot. The fallen tree spot was something that inspired me while on a walk near my neighborhood.

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
Nikon d600
50 mm
85 mm
reflector, studio lights

What time of day were these taken?
two hours prior to sunset

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
I use Photoshop for post-processing. I used some texture overlays on some of the studio shots for a shabby, vintage look.

What is your favorite thing about this session?
It was fun to try out some new concepts! I love how we got such a warm, glowing light in the neutral wooded background. It really made the colors and Maddie stand out in her portraits. I also enjoyed getting to know Maddie, her mom, and a new make-up artist better.

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
I always try to go the extra mile to give each senior a unique, authentic, and fun senior portrait experience. Sometimes seniors want to try something out-of-the-box, so this session was an effort to broaden my experience in the studio and on location.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
“Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” Don’t be afraid to work with others to try new concepts…even if you don’t gain something monetarily. The worst that will come out of it will be that you gained new insight. The best part is deepening and extending relationships with others. That can’t be bought!
