Letting a senior express herself and her passion for art in her senior photo session creates the most unique experience for your clients.  Jenn of Jenn Lewis Photography says that this senior expresses herself through art and by creating art at her photo session, Jenn was able to create something amazing for this senior!  She even allowed the senior to create art on her own face which is amazing!!

Check out this session below and be sure to check out more of Jenn’s work here.  Thanks for sharing Jenn!

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?  Our first session was shot in two locations…downtown then in a field of trees.  When we were shooting in the field, I wanted to portray her independence and vulnerability.  So we set up a “room” with no walls in the midst of the trees.  I loved that her mom brought an antique phone that we used during the session.  To me, it showed her attempt to stay connected while being on her own.  Kaitlin enjoys art, so I wanted to express that in some way.  So for the second shoot, I captured her creating her own art.  Painting is her outlet, so we started with that.  Then I let her express herself by painting her face and body any way she wanted.  We had a lot of fun with this part of the shoot and we had several onlookers, as you can imagine! 🙂

Where did this shoot take place?  These shoots took place in the Winston-Salem, North Carolina area.

What equipment was used for this shoot?  I used my Canon 5D Mark III with Canon 100mm f/2.8L and Canon 580 EXII speedlight and Radio Popper System.

What time of day were these taken?  These Sessions both began about 1-1/2 hours before sunset.

What is your favorite thing about this session?  I love the colors in these sessions!  I’m a huge fan of color and I really enjoyed both shooting and editing Kaitlin’s images!

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?  For the first part, I just asked her to bring several of her favorite outfits.  For the second part (the art shoot), I gave her my ideas for the concept and we discussed the clothing and items needed.  I also use a makeup artist for all of my seniors now, and she did a fantastic job!

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?  I love a good clean edit.  I use Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6.  I like to give my images a pop of color and contrast.

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?  Kaitlin is not your typical senior girl, so I knew that her session had to be as unique as she is.  I customize sessions to my clients personalities and interests, which keeps it fun and different for every shoot!

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?  Get to know your seniors!  They’re smart, funny, sweet and have big dreams and a bright future.  When you ask them questions and listen to their answers, you’ll be able to give them a session that’s all about them!  This is most likely the last time they’ll have professional photos taken until their wedding day, so make it count!
