Brief Description of the Session

This session was style for The Chic Retreat Workshop that I spoke at last week.  I knew we would be shooting in the city and that my location would have to be determined once I was there so I went with neutral colors and fun textures that could look great anywhere.

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?

Funny enough, my inspiration was a tulle skirt that I had custom made but didn’t arrive on time. But isn’t that the way it goes… We just never know what might happen!

Where did this photo shoot take place?

We shot this session at Pike Place Market on a Saturday! PPM is a major Seattle tourist attraction and the market was bustling – I actually really enjoy the challenge of shooting in areas like this – it pushed me to thing outside the box as I search for great light.

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?

Absolutely! I always get my seniors involved! They are as much about wardrobe as I am…And when it comes down to final choices, I always ask… “Which one do you feel the most beautiful in?” If she feels great, the camera will see it!

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?

I used both my 5D Mark III and 5D Mark II with a 50mm  on one and 24-70L on another. My go to is my 50mm thought so I end up favoring that one most of the time!

What time of day were these taken?

These were taken mid day! The weather was crazy too! We had sun then rain then sun then rain! We worked with natural overhangs and reflectors to get the light just right!

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?

I use a very simple editing style! I like a classic look! For these I just used a simple levels adjustment, color balance (I had a lot of green coming back t me), Portraiture and than a slight sharpen with high pass filter.

What is your favorite thing about this session?

I get obsessed over my subjects not the props or the backdrops. I l.o.v.e. tightly framed shots and beautiful expression! Kiran was an absolute natural in front of the camera and her serious face was to die for! My favorite thing about this session is definitely seeing Kiran feel so beautiful and having that reflect in the camera!

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?

I want ever girl I photograph to feel beautiful, to see the back of the camera and love the way they look! My favorite is when I hear, ‘I can’t believe that’s me!’ We all deserve to have that one shot that we feel absolutely stunning in, my goal is to give each of my seniors an entire experience around feeling stunning.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?

Shoot for yourself! Get out there with a girl and try out all those amazing techniques, poses, lighting tricks!  When you don’t have the pressure of a client – you can really slow down, take your time and test those awesome ideas you keep forgetting about until you pack up your camera and start driving back home.
