The past few days in my state have been nothing but rain, rain, rain.  Seeing this beautiful summer session by Cassandra of Rooted Love Photography helps me (and fellow South Carolinians) remember the sun!

“My inspiration was the idea of an endless summer before your senior year,” said Cassandra.  “Gorgeous sunsets near the Buffalo waterfront, breezy nights and backlighting!”

Thanks for sharing this beautiful session with Seniorologie Cassandra!

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
My inspiration was the idea of an endless summer before your senior year. Gorgeous sunsets near the Buffalo waterfront, breezy nights and backlighting!

Where did this photo shoot take place?
Buffalo Lakeside Commerce Park in Buffalo, NY. This used to be shipyard area for importing and exporting industrial products in and out of the city in the early 1900’s. The are has recently been revitalized and is somewhat of a little secret.

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
My senior chose her outfits and accessories based on the location we decided on. Her overall natural, Bohemian style fit our location perfectly.

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
The camera I used was my new Canon 5D Mark iii and I used my 70-200mm lens for the whole session.

What time of day were these taken?
7:30-9p

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
Most editing was done in Lightroom, including skin smoothing. I tried to create a light and airy feel, bumping the shadows and blacks up to 70-100 and increasing the warmth and magenta with the sliders. I finished the images in Photoshop and enhanced where the light was coming in slightly with Florabella actions and added some light sharpening.

What is your favorite thing about this session?
My favorite thing about this session was watching my senior totally open up and be herself. Both of her parents wanted to attend the session but they let us hang out alone. We would talk about each spot we shot at and start with a pose she felt comfortable with, then she would just do her thing from there. She would always end up looking down and then laughing and I love those shots the most!

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
I want this session to convey my senior’s naturally fun personality and style and my love of capturing real expressions in pretty light.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
One tip that works for me is constantly complimenting them and letting my senior see what I’m doing. I like to show them a great shot that is really flattering. They get excited and have more confidence because they like what they see.
