Mixing in elements that make your senior feel comfortable at her shoot is important and really helps showcase the senior in her unique way.

“Using props, a mixture of urban and natural locations and a variety of well pieced together outfits, really created an atmosphere that put Julia at ease,” said Emil Rodriguez-Powell of Slice of Lime Photography in Mechanicsburg, PA.  “In turn, this allowed her to have fun and allowed her personality to come shining through her senior pictures.”

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
100 percent this shoot was inspired by our senior, Julia. Her vision for her senior session was something that didn’t scream “traditional” senior portraits. She used the words “edgy”, “feminine”, “artsy”, and “creative” when talking about how she envisioned the look and feel of her perfect shoot. Location, prop, and clothing choices were then made to support what Julia’s vision was for her shoot.

Where did this photo shoot take place?
This photo shoot took place out and about in Midtown Harrisburg, PA and in an overgrown field 2 minutes from my house in Mechanicsburg, PA.

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
Boy do we love to collaborate!

Julia met with me for her initial consultation where we got to know each other and she shared about herself, her passions, and what she was hoping for her shoot. At her fashion consultation with Slice of Lime stylist, Stephanie Fletcher, Stephanie pieced together each of Julia’s outfits using a combination of pieces that Julia brought to her style consult mixed with pieces from our very own Slice of Lime style closet. Stephanie collaborated with Tiffany Novak at Salon Noti in Lemoyne, PA for Julia’s hair and make up.

Throughout the whole process, Julia, Stephanie, and myself each pinned different ideas to a custom Pinterest board we created to help bring Julia’s styled senior session to life.

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
Canon 5d mark ii
50 mm 1.4
24-70 mm 2.8L

What time of day were these taken?
late afternoon – sunset

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
I edit entirely in Lightroom. I use pre-sets that I created for myself that are my “go to” for each session. I do some skin softening but don’t like for my images to look too “over processed”.

What is your favorite thing about this session?
Hands-down, JULIA’S SMILE! This girl’s enthusiasm was just so energizing and contagious through out her shoot. She commented over and over again from start to finish just how excited she was and how beautiful she felt and how much she loved her outfits throughout the entire shoot.

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
I feel this session really highlights the time and effort we put into making each session unique and FUN for each of our seniors. It is my hope that the fun Julia was having during her session, how much she loved how she looked, and the confidence she was exuding really comes shining through in each of her photos.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
Photographing seniors and showcasing who they are starts with CONNECTION. If you don’t do pre-session consultations, I strongly recommend you should. The relationships you build with your senior clients and their parents throughout their senior portrait process are so essential to getting them to trust you and thus really allowing them to relax and let their personalities shine through during their photo shoots. Making pretty pictures is AWESOME, but really connecting with my seniors is something I value even more.
