What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
Jada’s wardrobe choices were bold, much like her personality, so I knew that her locations had to match that without overpowering her.

Where did this photo shoot take place?
Downtown Columbus

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
Absolutely! She and I talked extensively about the look she was going for, what she was going to wear, etc. At one point she brought up the idea of wearing cowboy boots, and since “Cowtown” is the nickname for Columbus, I thought why not? She brought the boots, I brought the white kimono, and the set we did in the downtown prairie ended up being my favorite.

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
Canon 6D; 85mm 1.8; 5-in-1 reflector

What time of day were these taken?
5-8 p.m.

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
I adjust exposure, white balance, contrast, sharpness, a little bit of clarity and vibrance in Adobe Bridge. I then pull the images into Photoshop for blemish removal and skin softening.

What is your favorite thing about this session?
If I have to choose just one, it would have to be the prairie in the middle of the city. But Columbus is one of my favorite places to take seniors, because we were able to create a variety of looks in a variety of locations that were all in a 5 mile radius of each other. Having the ability to do that, thus providing Jada the experience of a lifetime, is my absolute favorite thing about this session.

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
I always try my hardest to match the location to the personality and outfits. For Jada, I didn’t want anything that didn’t make sense – if she couldn’t eventually see herself in the city, we never would have gone there. If she had come to me a bit more timid, we would have stayed and played in the endless array of natural settings close to home. And it would have been perfect. But with her sense of adventure, it just didn’t make sense. I love color, and I love light. Jada’s session is a perfect example of the photography style I enjoy.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
Building a relationship with your clients prior to shooting them can really help them overcome any nervousness and reservations they may have about jumping in front of the camera. By talking with them and coaching them through the whole process (what to wear, where to shoot, how to perfect makeup), I build trust in my seniors, which, in turn, allows me to get confident-looking images from girls who truly feel beautiful.
