It is so great to photography a senior and then a few years later get to photograph her sister.  Brand loyalty from a family is one of the greatest compliments you can receive as a senior portrait photographer.

In this beautiful session below, Amber Fox showcases the sister of one of her former clients and this senior also happens to be one of her Foxy Models (cutest model name ever!)

“This amazing senior wanted an urban session that reflected her hip fashion sense,” said Amber.  “I photographed her sister three years ago in a field of flowers, so Emily wanted everything opposite to her sister.  So urban walls, graffiti and a funky cactus backdrop with dramatic off-camera lighting was the set up for this awesome senior session.”

Check out this urban senior session below and read what else Amber had to say about it!  Thanks for sharing your work with Seniorologie Amber!

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
I have all my clients fill out a detailed senior portrait questionnaire, so I can get a better sense of what exactly my client is looking for. I have photographed Emily several times, since she is a part of my Foxy Model Program, so she wanted to do something different than the other photo shoots she has already participated in. After reading her questionnaire and texting back and forth with the client, I created a variety of storyboards of various locations I like to shoot at. Based on those, the client and her mom made the decision on the exact locations she wanted along with what outfits would best fit within those spots. Every outfit was on point and it was a fun shoot!

Where did this photo shoot take place?
The shoot started off in an alley way in Downtown Fullerton. It’s a small alley way that is surrounded by industrial shops like mechanics and a prop making facility for local theater houses. There was lots of dilapidated walls that serve as great texture, graffiti walls (which is super hard to find in Orange County) and great light. After doing our urban section with two different outfits, we then headed to an awesome field of cactus. The sun was low and I wanted something dramatic to match her loud personality, so the off camera lighting was perfect for this location.

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
Yes, we definitely worked together to come up with the perfect locations for this shoot. I have shot at all of these locations before with other clients, so I sent the mother collages of tons of locations and her and the daughter carefully chose their favorites and we went from there. And based on the looks and colors of the locations, her outfits were carefully selected to match the mood and feel.

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
For the first half of the shoot, I used my 5D Mark II with my 50 1.2 and 85 1.8. And for the second half of the shoot, I continued to use the same equipment, but added some off-camera lighting equipment. I am using my Cheetah Light 360 with a Octabox for this shoot. After practicing with Jared Rey at the Conference 12 workshop, I had to put into practice my new off-camera lighting skills. Thanks Jared!

What time of day were these taken?
3-5 pm

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
For all my shoots, I process in Lightroom first to make all the images consistent and fix any issues I might have. I then bring them into Photoshop and use a light brush over the skin with Portraiture and pump up the blacks to allow the image to pop. Nothing too fancy.

What is your favorite thing about this session?
I am in love with the off-camera lighting photos. I have been trying to learn this form of lighting for the past year and I am so excited that the photos came out so well, and with out much confusion on my part. I was confident and the photos came out awesome.

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
I want this session to convey that this senior is hip & happy, just as is my brand. I love working with seniors and making them feel beautiful, and I think I did that with this photo shoot of the lovely Emily.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
Challenge yourself! Even though I like to shoot at the same locations a lot, I love to challenge myself and get unique shots of the senior to reflect their individual style and personality. So with this shoot, I wanted super urban and I wanted edginess, and I think I got it! Boom!
