With the new year comes the new search for senior spokesmodels!  I just sent out my applications last night! 🙂  With spokesmodels, a lot of senior photographers do big group shoots.  The shoot below is a great example of a fun concept themed spokesmodels shoot!

Julie Syvrud of Photo Jewels Photography in Rockwall, Texas shares her fun camping themed shoot below.  “Our theme was ‘Let’s Go Camping’ and we had a lot of fun with some props, big and small,” said Julie.  “We had a gorgeous fall day to work with, and the girls were total troopers, despite the poison ivy and spiders!”

Check out this fun session below and read what else Julie had to say about it.  Thanks for sharing your work with Seniorologie!

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
My original inspiration was some vintage camping signs I came across online.  Then I began to explore the concept further, and from my research, I felt like this was a unique styled shoot that I had not seen done before.

Where did this photo shoot take place?
This shoot took place on a friend’s private property in Rockwall, Texas.

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
Yes!  Before our big fall shoot, we have an Outfit Review day, where the girls come over with their clothing and we tweak things a bit to make sure everyone fits the theme and that no one is too matchy-matchy.  This is great because it motivates the girls to have their outfits ready by a certain date, but still gives them time to make some changes before the big shoot day.

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
For this shoot, I used my Nikon D750 and a variety of lenses:  the 85mm 1.4, the 70-200 2.8, and the 24-70 2.8.  I used a reflector in some situations, but most of the time, I did not.

What time of day were these taken?
Mid to late afternoon

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
I edited these photos with my normal post processing, but may have played up the fall colors in the background a little in some shots.  We have such a pretty natural landscape here in Texas, that it didn’t need much help to look awesome.

What is your favorite thing about this session?
My favorite thing about this session is seeing the smiles on my models’ faces, and realizing the relationships that were being built right before my eyes.  One goal of my model team is that the girls become true friends and are supportive and encouraging of one another.  Also, the girls and I first began talking about this concept in May, but the shoot didn’t occur till September, so there was a lot of waiting time.  It was super fulfilling to see these ideas come to life!

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
I think this shoot conveys one element I always try to incorporate into my senior model shoots or my individual senior shoots: FUN.  I strive to capture natural, authentic expressions.  There is a lot of pressure put on teen girls to look serious, dramatic, and older than their age in photos, and I wanted to keep our shoot light, easygoing, and casual. I also had an editorial feel in mind for this concept, and the girls did a great job of just being themselves in front of the camera.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
I believe that the photographer truly sets the tone for the whole shoot within the first 5 minutes.  If we present a fun, laid back, genuine vibe, I think we can expect our subjects to mirror that same energy.  Coming across as nervous, unsure, or critical will make our subjects feel that way too!  Like most things in life, you get out of it what you put into it!
