Educating your seniors before their shoot on what to wear really helps the seniors prepare for their shoot.  Cindy of Cindy Swanson Photography says that she tells her seniors to focus on texture, color and layering and this senior really did that well.

“I have a huge container of accessories and we just played and added to each outfit that she had,” said Cindy.  “She had a ball dressing and then coming to the back of my car and adding on to her outfit with fun accessories!”

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
Her clothing directed me on what locations I wanted to photograph, and the light in this field was just perfect.

Where did this photo shoot take place?
In a small town east of Dallas, TX.  We photographed in the city, and then went on the outskirts in search of that perfect field.

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
Just gave her direction on texture, layering and color.  I partner with an incredibly great local boutique and they know what my tips are for clothing for a senior session.  She went to this local store that week and let them help to style her.

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
Nikon D700, 85mm 1.4

What time of day were these taken?
the last 2 hours before sunset
Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
Not much was done, but I do love Florabella actions for their creamy tone for backlit field shots. So I did use those and I tend to put a little hint of haze on each one and use the history brush to bring back the face a little.

What is your favorite thing about this session?
Gosh, I’m being repetitive but her clothing, and how easy she was to mold and pose.  She was so willing to try anything that it made me even more comfortable to try new things and new poses with her. One of my favorites is the one with her on the large tree stumps.  I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with her when I got her over there, but she was so willing to let me play, that it came easy.   I LOVE the depth in that location.

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
Her laid back style, her cute laugh…I love that parents tell me that I captured their daughter! Photography-wise…I want it to convey my love for that romantic, free flowing, relaxed, backlit photography.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
To be comfortable in directing them, that’s what they WANT! They see my confidence and relax. I tell them that I may mold them into a position that may feel funny, but that’s it isn’t meant to feel perfect on their end, but meant to LOOK fantastic on my end….to trust me. And they do!
