Capturing the essence of a senior’s hometown also captures the essence of who that senior is and shows where she grew up.  This colorful senior session below does exactly that.

“Sydney requested photos on Mass Street and specifically the soda shop because she wanted to capture the essence of her home town,” said Kara McBain of Eternal Focus Photography in Lawrence, Kansas.

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
Sydney requested photos on Mass Street and specifically the soda shop because she wanted to capture the essence of her home town. She says, “Lawrence is such a unique place of colorful shops and people and Mass Street represents that. I wanted that to come through in the pictures.”

Where did this photo shoot take place?
This session took place on and around Mass Street in Lawrence, Kansas.

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
Sydney put together her own looks and had the idea of shooting at Mass Street Soda. Based on her style and what she envisioned for the session, I was able to find a few more fun locations in the area that fit her personality well!

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
Canon 5D Mark III
Canon 70-200mm 2.8 & 50mm 1.2
reflector

What time of day were these taken?
Just before sunset.

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
Lightroom is all I used for this session. I have a simple preset that I created to use as a starting point on most sessions, a little additional tweaking if needed, then I finished up with a couple of my favorite Lightroom Retouching Toolkit brushes!

What is your favorite thing about this session?
This was Sydney’s second session with me this year, so she was super comfortable in front of the camera and really let her personality shine through.

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
My goal with this session was to showcase not only Sydney’s natural modeling ability, but also her adorable personality! I love connecting with my seniors and making them feel natural and at ease while being photographed.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
Be the expert and someone they can trust for great lighting, locations, posing, etc. but still listen to their ideas and get to know them so that you can provide each senior with a unique session that fits who they are and what they love!
