Teens are usually involved in some sort of extra curricular activity.  And when you get a client who has been playing tennis most of her life, you can’t take her photos without showcasing this part of her.

Katie Myrick of Katie Myrick Photography in North Carolina said, “When she stepped foot onto the courts (which was uncharacteristically busy with people everywhere) her attitude shifted to game mode.  We found a small unused corner court and had a blast!”

Check out this beautiful session showcasing this senior and her love of tennis!  Thanks for sharing your work with Seniorologie Katie!!

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
My main goal was to show Shelby’s amazing personality. When she stepped foot onto the courts (which was uncharacteristically busy with people everywhere) her attitude shifted to game mode. We found a small unused corner court and had a blast.

Where did this photo shoot take place?
This portion of the shoot took place on the tennis courts of Northeastern High School. We arrived about 20 minutes before sunset and shot furiously to capture the light drenched court and moody shadows.

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
Yes! Shelby had an extended senior session so we were able to shoot at 4 totally different locations (urban, vineyard, river and tennis courts). She is an amazing young woman and we truly had a blast during her session. The tennis courts happen to be my favorite series because of the fierce mood, light and black and whites.

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
Nikon D 3 and 85 mm and ISO cranked way up as we were loosing light.

What time of day were these taken?
20 minutes before sunset

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
I use LR exclusively and have created by hand a black and white conversion preset that suits my style. I love a moody, contrasty light filled image with a smidge of grain mixed in.

What is your favorite thing about this session?
I love that this session captured who she is. She will be able to look back at her tennis images and know that she was a “baller” with an attitude on the court that would intimidate any competitor. It was fun, different and beautiful.

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
I shoot lifestyle photography too and one of my favorite things about that genre is using the light specifically with black and white images in mind. SO, one of my main goals this year was to incorporate my lifestyle style into my seniors. And in doing so, has made my images a whole lot stronger and more diverse.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
The best thing you can do for your seniors is give them good direction. These kids aren’t models (even if they might look like it). Guide them through each pose, action and task. Show them what you want them to do. Praise the heck out of them when they nail it and have one heck of a good time. 🙂
