The Law of Attraction states that likes attract likes so if you think about positive things for your business then you will receive positive things.  But there is also an action part to this law.  So by doing things such as photographing the work you want to get, you will then get that work.

For photographers, continuing to showcase our work is taking action and putting out into the universe what you want to receive.  Concept shoots allow you to take action, continue to shoot and showcase what type of work you want to get.  And the down season is the perfect time to plan concept shoots!

So how do you go about planning a concept shoot?  Here some easy steps to creating a great concept shoot for your business:

  1. Plan Ahead – Start brainstorming ideas and then make a plan for those ideas.  A concept can be anything from elaborate to simple.  Seniorologie has a Concept Challenge going on and it is all about Ballet and Rock. See post here if you want to participate in this challenge and have your work showcased on Seniorologie.
  2. Create Inspiration Boards – Once you have an idea look for inspiration and create a board to help you visualize that idea.  You can use Pinterest or Polyvore to help plan the look of the shoot.  Look at teen magazines or ad campaigns for inspiration.  Seeing it is the key to making sure your vision is coming to life.
  3. Shop – This could mean pulling from things you or your model already has or literally going shopping.  You need to pull together the props, clothing, etc to make this shoot possible.
  4. Location Scout – Location is a big piece of the puzzle so make sure you take the time to find the location that helps tell the story of your concept.  Be sure to visit the location at the time of day you plan on shooting so you can see exactly how the light is and what direction it is coming from.  Make sure you get permission to use the location.
  5. Look for Models – get some of your past clients, ask your reps or put out a model call on social media.  There are lots of girls that would love to have their photo taken by you!
  6. Create a Shot List – Make a list of specific shots you want to take.  For instance, the Seniorologie Concept Challenge is about Ballet and Rock so a shot list should include dancing photos!  Make a list of certain dance poses so during the shoot you won’t forget.  And it is totally ok to pull out your list during the shoot!  This shoot is about you creating what you want so take your time and get all the shots you need.
  7. Book Hair and Makeup – if you work with a regular hair and makeup artist let them in on what you are planning and see if they are interested in working with you on this project.  Lots of artists love to collaborate and get images for their portfolio.

Don’t forget we love seeing your concept shoots!  Whether it is the Ballet and Rock Concept for Seniorologie’s Concept Challenge or something else, submit your concept shoots to us by filling out the submission form found on the blog!  Happy Concept Shooting!
