Prom season is here and seniors across the country are shopping for dresses and getting excited about such a fun night!  To celebrate Prom Season, I wanted to share this fabulous prom conceptual shoot from Meaghan Pafford of Meaghan Photography.

Check this session out and read what Meaghan has to say about how this shoot came together!  Be sure to check out more of Meaghan’s work here.  Thanks for sharing Meaghan!!

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?
Prom is one of my favorite times of year as a senior portrait photographer.  I love seeing the new prom styles and fashion every year & creating a concept shoot around that.  This year I wanted to collaborate with a few other vendors in the area.  I met with Jessica Gallo of Fine and Fleurie (www.fineandfleurie.com), and Jen Lewis of Pastel Makeup & Hair (www.pastelmakeup.com) and we collaborated on a concept for our shoot.  We decided we wanted to do four very specific looks. Four different girls, all with totally different styles.  We decided on a vintage girl, romanic beauty, the party girl, and an edgy girl.  We also wanted to make sure we had some gorgeous gowns for the shoot so we contacted Brittany’s House of Elegance (www.brittanysformals.com) and they let us choose some of their beautiful gowns to use.
For a fun extra we also decided to photograph each girls handbag and some of the things that they would take with them to prom.   I think it was another great way to express each girls individual style.

Where did this photo shoot take place?
We wanted this shoot to be focused on the dresses, styling, hair & makeup.  So we decided on a very simple location so we could highlight each girls beauty.  We actually shot these images in my hair & makeup artist Jen Lewis’ home.  We did quite a few photos in her dining room & in her adorable studio.

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
Since this was a concept collaboration the girls did not help with the shoot.  We chose each girl with a specific style in mind.

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
I used the Canon 5D Mark III, a 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, a 35mm 1.4 & reflectors.

What time of day were these taken?
From about 1pm-5pm

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
I keep my post processing pretty simple.  I edit in lightroom and use the VSCO film lightroom presets.

What is your favorite thing about this session?
I think my favorite thing about this session was how everything came together.  It is true that we are better together than by ourselves.  This session would not have been the same without each girls amazing style…from the hair & makeup to the dress and styling.  I think working with such amazing vendors and talent made all the difference in this shoot.

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
I would like this shoot to show every teen girl that you can bring who you are as an individual into your everyday style and for formal occasions.  I wanted to combine fun, young, and fashionable with an editorial vibe.  I think it was a great example of what I love to shoot as a senior photographer.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
Have fun and don’t be afraid to take some risks!  Setting up concept shoots can be one of the best things for you and your business.  You have the opportunity to be creative and show who you are as an artist. I find that the shoots that I put my heart and creativity into are the ones that people seem to like them most!
