What was your inspiration for the photo shoot? My inspiration for this shoot came from Kelsey’s red lips!! I adore the way she wears her make up. I have a tendency to bring out the vintage from the present day.
Where did this photo shoot take place? This photo shoot took place in downtown Cary NC.
Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot? I did collaborate with Kelsey on the style/theme of this shoot. I told her i was very inspired by her make up and she could play the part of a gal from the 40’s or 50’s perfectly!!!! I do work with an amazing fashion stylist! Once I have a consultation with my senior I share our vision with Nitra! Then she goes to work finding amazing clothing to make my vision come to life! Clothing is a very important part of any session.
What camera, lens and equipment were used for this shoot? I used the nikon D7000 with the 50 1.4 and the 24-70. I’ve recently made the switch to the canon mark III and its fabulous!!!
What time of day were these taken? I shot an hour and a half prior to sunset, my favorite time to shoot!!
Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session? I try to nail exposure and composition in camera so there’s little work left to do in post. I make minor tweaks in Lightroom. Bumping up exposure, tweaking the temperature, adding a bit if contrast and vibrancy. Then I export into photoshop where I customize with my own adjustments and I finish off by using a red leaf action at a low opacity.
What is your favorite thing about this session? My favorite thing about this session is the nostalgia, the way it makes me feel! I look at her and I play a story in my head about women from that time period! How they dressed the accessories they used and they way they wore their hair and make up! Is she on her way to a soda shop or maybe heading out to do some shopping!
What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style? I hope that every girl can take the way they feel about themselves or a dream they might have and share it with me so that I can help bring it to life!! Your senior year is such a milestone how do you want to remember yourself from this time period in your life?
I want my clients to know that they can lift the bar and allow a touch of creativity mixed in with their personalities! The possibilities are endless!
What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors? I suggest sending a small questionnaire with your welcome letter. Including questions about their favorite clothing style, music they enjoy, and what time period would they visit if it were possible. Doing this allows them to open up while giving you a handful of insights into who they are. Then you can best suggest a custom session just for them! Whether its a special outfit, a wreath of flowers in her hair or a theme! As long as they feel unique and special I feel I’m doing my job!
