This Boho Beauty session by Caron Tolstyka of Photography by Caron is “about pushing the limits of the traditional senior session, stepping away from the norm,” said Caron.

While this session totally embodies a California, hippy vibe, it was taken in Michigan!  But you would never know it wasn’t in California!  🙂  As a photographer, you have to work with your surrounding locations but it is amazing how you can transform a location to somewhere else by the feel and look of the photos.

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?

I really wanted to do a boho session that focused on the girl so I kept the props to a minimum (I’m not a prop girl anyway so it was easy). Maddy has a natural California-hippy nature – all 5’10” of her. So she fit my vision perfectly.

Where did this photo shoot take place?
Grosse Ile, MI

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
I work with a professional makeup Artist for all of my senior sessions, Makeup Artistry by Jill Sollars. We started to talk about doing a fun boho session for a while now. We pulled the outfit together along with an unexpected eye color- purple. We decided to keep it simple with her clothing and layer jewelry. I personally assist all of my seniors with clothing and styling.
Jill is my creative twin- she always knows what I want for my girls. I love her to PIECES!

What camera, lens or other equipment was used for this shoot?
Canon mark II 70-200 2.8L II for the whole session-

What time of day were these taken?
between 5-7pm

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
I like to keep my processing simple yet a little romantic.

What is your favorite thing about this session?
the planning- clothing, hair, make-up- love that part!

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
I like to focus more on my subjects and bring out their natural beauty. We are all beautiful in our own way- I feel it’s my job to help show my seniors just how beautiful they are.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?
Remember that you are shooting images that will be looked back at for years to come- make sure you give them something to be proud of.
Remember having lasers as your faux backdrop? not so cool now, huh!
