Have you ever wondered what it is like in a different part of the country?  What senior season is in on the west coast as opposed to the east coast?  Or whether other parts of the country allow seniors to submit their own photos or if they require a certain studio to take all the yearbook photos?

Well I have often wondered all of these things and more.  So I ASKED! 🙂  I asked some photographers in different parts of the country to share the answers to these questions, and below is what they said!

Tammy Pence of Tammy Pence Photography – Overland Park, Kansas

When is “Senior Season” in your area?  “Senior Season” in my area begins in June and gets really busy in July and August. The high schools around my area offer senior “ads” or “tribute” pages where you can buy from 1/8 to a full page ad in the yearbook just for your son or daughter.  Most seniors want to have one or more of their senior portraits included in that ad.  The deadline for those ads is usually the last week of August or first part of September.  So, I do most of my seniors between June and August.  I get a few in the Fall and then the next spring there are always a couple of people who call at the last minute to have senior portraits taken for announcements and invitations before they graduate.

Do seniors choose their own photographers and submit their own photos for yearbook photos or do they have to have their yearbook photo taken by a school appointed photographer?  The traditional/standard yearbook photos are taken by studios that have a contract with the high school.  The students in our area typically do not have a choice who to go to for those photographs.

When is “Senior Season” in your area?  “Senior Season” in our area varies but a lot of seniors use the summer before school starts through the fall of senior year. Then others will get their pictures at the end of spring right before graduation so they can have their own new pictures to send out for grad announcements.

Do seniors choose their own photographers and submit their own photos for yearbook photos or do they have to have their yearbook photo taken by a school appointed photographer?  Seniors have their formal or drape pictures for the yearbook taken from the school appointed photographers. Seniors can choose their own photographers for any other senior pictures they want taken for senior pages and such in the yearbook.

Amber Fox of Amber Fox Photography – Southern California

When is “Senior Season” in your area?  Senior season in Southern California really happens all year around, since the weather is almost always glorious. Since the local high schools don’t allow the possibility of hiring an outside photographer for the yearbook photo, it allows a lot of flexibility for the So Cal Senior Portrait photographer. Ideally I like to photograph most of my Seniors in the Fall and then early Spring, while leaving room in my schedule to shoot those last minute shoots kids can’t live without and for me to focus on marketing during early summer. I typically I do a group photo shoot with my Foxy Senior Reps in May or June, so they can pass out cards to all their friends right before school gets out. I consider this time the planting of seeds before the yearbook company convinces them to spend gobs of money on a boring photo. While at the same time, I have lots of Seniors who are doing last minute shoots in April & May, taking advantage of the spring wildflowers. So really I am shooting mostly in Fall and Spring, taking a good break over Christmas season to focus on the business side of my biz and spend quality time with my family and friends.

Do seniors choose their own photographers and submit their own photos for yearbook photos or do they have to have their yearbook photo taken by a school appointed photographer?  Senior portrait photography is an up and coming art form in the Southern California area. In the land of wedding photographers, more and more photographers are exploring the subject of Seniors, but there really isn’t that many of us who are concentrating on the Senior market. While parts of the Midwest have thriving Senior markets, most urban areas of California are still controlled by the yearbook companies and Senior Portrait photographers are having to do a lot of educating to possible clients of the value of Senior Portrait photography. At this point in the game, the Senior market is growing in it’s recognition and value. So many kids don’t even know it’s an option, so it’s photogs like us, who have to show it to them!

When is “Senior Season” in your area?
I see a lot of senior photographers in my area that are super busy during the summer but I get the majority of my clients in the fall. They like the colors and the fact that it has cooled down a bit. A lot of my clients are on mission trips, vacations and working a bunch in the summer.
Do seniors choose their own photographers and submit their own photos for yearbook photos or do they have to have their yearbook photo taken by a school appointed photographer?
The majority of schools require seniors to go to a contracted photographer to get their photo in the yearbook. They can pay a minimal fee to just have that photo taken though. There are a few private schools that have the option to send in whichever photo they want as their senior photo in the yearbook.
Nicole Lubin of Nicole Lubin Photography – Baltimore, Maryland
When is “Senior Season” in your area?  Senior season in Baltimore begins at the end of the student’s junior year and continues through to the spring of their senior year.  The bulk of my senior sessions are in the summer and early fall, optimal weather is in the  spring and fall seasons.  Although the summer weather here can get a bit steamy, we’ve endured many hot summer sessions and always ended up with really gorgeous pictures.  Usually it’s teeth-chatteringly cold in January and February, not idea for a senior portrait.
Do seniors choose their own photographers and submit their own photos for yearbook photos or do they have to have their yearbook photo taken by a school appointed photographer?  Many schools in Baltimore allow seniors to choose their own photographer and submit their own photos for the yearbook.  However just as many schools go the traditional route, requiring the student the use the school photographer’s picture for their yearbook.  I’ve worked around this by promoting my senior sessions as a way to capture the moment,  marking this time in the senior’s life with many pictures showing the many different facets of their personality as it is right now.

When is “Senior Season” in your area?
The senior session in Seattle usually starts in July and lasts through the end of October.  Most seniors are required to get a senior photo in to their yearbook editor by October.  I have some customers that want to schedule a shoot in the spring of their senior year so we’ll meet up to take the yearbook photo in the fall and then schedule the full shoot for some time around the following April.  The only time I’m not photographing seniors is around November through Feb cause the weather in Seattle is crummy that time of year.
Do seniors choose their own photographers and submit their own photos for yearbook photos or do they have to have their yearbook photo taken by a school appointed photographer?
The majority of the seniors I photograph look for their own photographer for the photo that will be submitted for the yearbook.   Very rarely does the school require photos from an appointed photographer in the yearbook.  When I meet with my customers to look at their photos we always talk about which photo they want me to send to their yearbook editor.  I usually suggest let the senior select this photo as it will be in their yearbook and hopefully best represent who they are!
Marci Weidler of Circle of Life Photography – Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania
When is “Senior Season” in your area?  Senior “season” in Central PA starts in late June and runs steadily through October. The bulk of inquiries come in July and August with many still hoping for a summer session, but by then I am planning fall sessions.
Do seniors choose their own photographers and submit their own photos for yearbook photos or do they have to have their yearbook photo taken by a school appointed photographer?
At this time, there is only one school in the area that allows students to submit their senior portrait, all other high schools have an appointed photographer. Personally, I find the latter more appealing as I do not have the added stress of making sure to get a “yearbook headshot” during the photoshoot and submit it to the yearbook staff by a certain deadline.
Casey Rose of Casey Rose Photography – Raleigh, North Carolina
When is “Senior Season” in your area?  I would say I get the vast majority of my calls for senior bookings between mid-summer (July) through the fall (October).
Do seniors choose their own photographers and submit their own photos for yearbook photos or do they have to have their yearbook photo taken by a school appointed photographer?  In my area, most high schools have a school-appointed photographer for the yearbook portrait.  Students are required to pay a fee for this portrait ($25-$50) to be in the yearbook.  They then have the choice of purchasing packages from this school-appointed photographer.  These images tend to be studio portraits.  Obviously most of my seniors choose to only purchase the one yearbook portrait, so they can opt for a more customized, boutique portrait experience for their senior portraits.
Heather Thorne of Heather Thorne Photography – Dallas, Texas
When is “Senior Season” in your area? Senior season (at least for me) is the summer before their senior year. I have some clients push to the early fall because our TX summers can be brutal.
Do seniors choose their own photographers and submit their own photos for yearbook photos or do they have to have their yearbook photo taken by a school appointed photographer?  Most of my seniors will take the cap/gown pic for their yearbook by the school appointed photographer, then come to me for their full session.  A lot of times their parents will use my images for ads in the back of the yearbook and also their customized announcements.
April Rowley of April Rowley Photography – Laingsburg, Michigan
When is “Senior Season” in your area?  Senior season is about late June to the end of October.  There are a few exceptions as always, but that is when the majority of seniors have their photos taken.
Do Seniors choose their own photographers and submit their own photos for the yearbook or do they have to have their yearbook photo taken by a school appointed photographer?  Schools in my area do all different things.  Some have contracts with studios, some require a plain black background with specific head sizes and some are student choice.  There is a variety of options.
