Now, let me introduce Ryan Towe…

How did you get into photography?  I’ve always been a bit of a “gear junkie”.  I’ve always loved researching the latest consumer electronics.  I became really excited about photography when DLSR’s became a replacement for film cameras.  So in 2007, I purchased a Canon Rebel and took a photography class at a local community college.  I quickly learned about the basics and had actually become kind of bored with it for a while.  I continued to “dabble” in photography for about a year, just doing random things like taking photos of a lot of things, but mostly my friends and family.  I never really fell in love with photography until I shot my first senior session, which was at the beginning of 2009.

Any formal training?  In regards to photography, I was mostly self taught besides the Intro to Digital Photography class I took at my local community college.  I have attended numerous workshops, which I have found to be very valuable in helping me shape my style.  In regards to business, I do have a degree from Iowa State University, where I majored in Advertising and Sociology.

How long have you been in business?  I started charging in the summer of 2009 and went full time with photography that fall.  Scariest, but best decision I’ve ever made! 🙂

How long have you been photographing seniors?  My first senior was the beginning of 2009 and it quickly grew from there.

What do you love most about photographing seniors?  There are a lot of things that are great about seniors, but I think my favorite thing is that they’re up for anything and I can really be as creative as I want to be.

How would you describe your photography style? My goal is to create beautiful images that are exciting to look at, haha.  That beauty can come in so many ways – eyes, lighting, location, pose, color, editing, etc.  I think my images are usually a bold combination of two or more of those things. 🙂

What’s in your camera bag?  I shoot both Nikon and Canon – yes, BOTH! 🙂  I started on Canon and have loved shooting Canon but started having some issues with my camera a couple of years ago and decided to try Nikon.  I was planning on switching completely over, but then Canon came out with the 5D III and addressed all of my previous issues with the Mark II.  I love them both for different reasons.  In my camera bags, I have a Nikon D800, 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4, 105mm 2.8, Canon 5D Mark III, 24-70mm 2.8, 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.2, 70-200mm 2.8 II, speed lights, pocket wizards, and I often take the D700 and 5D II as backups.

What’s your favorite lens? If I had to pick one, it would be the Nikon 85mm 1.4.

What are you most excited to share with the attendees of The Seniorologie Tour Virginia?  I cannot wait to help other photographers on their journey to become the best photographer they can.  One of my favorite things about photography – and probably the reason I still love it – is there is always more you can learn.  I’ve found that workshops have been the best way for me to grow as a photographer and I’m so excited to give back.
