We try to feature as many concept shoots on Seniorologie as we can.  They are so creative and really are inspirational.  In addition to planning different concepts for all our events, I came up with an idea called the Concept in a Box.

The idea was to send one piece of clothing that would help different photographers create a concept shoot.  When I saw this skirt at Anthropologie.com, I knew I had to use it.  It just screamed Holiday to me and thus the concept was born..Holiday Sparkle.

This idea is something that I got a few of my friends to participate in.  I thought it would be so fun to provide one piece of the concept and let each photographer do the rest.  Seeing how they were inspired and how they created their specific shoot based on the concept Holiday Sparkle is so inspiring.

The first Holiday Sparkle Concept is by Misit Davis of Pink Fly Photography.  She created a look of white.  She paired the sequin skirt with a tshirt and sweater, added her own props of pinecones and a Christmas tree and more.  I love how hers turned out!

Check her shoot out below and read what Misti had to say about it.  What would you do with this concept and sequin skirt?  We would love to hear from you.  And stay tuned to the blog to see how you can participate in the Concept in a Box. 🙂

What inspired you about the sequin skirt?   Oh my goodness the amazing texture of the sequins and how it draped down to the floor.  It screamed holidays but yet it could be so versatile.

What idea/concept came to mind when you opened the concept in a box?    When I opened the box and saw the skirt I was so enthralled with the weight and texture and shine that I knew I wanted it to be the statement piece.  I envisioned a woodsy, bohemian look complete with the simplicity of just whites and golds. I wanted to incorporate a gold tree that I could light up in the middle of a wooded area as well as some pinecones.  I got busy looking at pinterest and formed an inspiration board that got my mind going.

Tell us a little about how you styled the skirt….  With the bohemian feel I wanted I needed to give it a more relaxed look so I decided to put a basic white tee tucked partly in with a muted color cardigan sweater (again for texture).  I had ordered a sequin head wrap on etsy but it didn’t come in on time so my assistant and I went to a fabric store and made one ourselves.  That was going to be the piece that tied it all together for that boho feel so it was a must.

What do you think is most beneficial about shooting concept shoots or shoots just for you?  I really think concept shoots are a great way to tap into your creativity and do something fresh and new.  Sometimes we find ourselves just shooting as our job and can lose that sense of being inspired and artistic. I think when you do concept shoots it brings that sense back to you and can really recharge your passion as well as help bring that inspiration into your daily senior sessions.

How do you feel they help you grow as a photographer?  When you are able to do a shoot solely for you you find yourself trying new things a lot easier than you would at a senior session because of the fear we have of someone else not liking it….and that paid for it.  So I truly believe that being able to try things and experiment and think a bit “outside the box” helps you to make your own sessions that much better.

What do you love most about shooting concepts?  The clothes!  I’m a shop-a-holic and love clothing.  I love being able to have a vision on a look and then without shopping but just sorting through my model’s clothes and mine and in the end being able to make it all come together.  That alone…..having a vision and watching it come together.  It’s a really cool feeling.
