I imaging that being twins can be lots of fun.  I mean we all have heard the stories of trading places, tricking parents or boyfriends and much more fun pranks twins can pull.  But I think finding your own voice as an individual is equally as important as creating that special twin bond.

Photographing twins so that you capture both their individual personalities and their unique bond is a challenge for any photographer.  But Laura Lee of Laura Lee Photography shows us a fun session that both shows these girls fun, sisterly bond and their unique individuality that makes each of them special.

Thanks for sharing this shoot with us Laura!  Be sure to check out Laura’s website for more of her work here.

What was your inspiration for this photo shoot?  The girls themselves…Emily and Elizabeth.  They were very open to my suggestions and had a clear idea of what they wanted their senior pictures NOT to look like, which was everybody else’s.  They wanted something uniquely them as individuals and uniquely them as twins.  Their mom wanted their images to be less about the background and more about the girls!  Makes sense to me!

Where did this shoot take place?  Intown Atlanta, Virginia Highlands neighborhood.  It’s very well known historical spot around here.

Did you collaborate with these seniors on their wardrobe for the photo shoot?  They described to me what they were wearing so I had a general idea of colors and style.  I knew they each had a dress and a more casual outfit.  It helped when I selected the flowers and backgrounds.

What camera, lens and equipment was used during this shoot?  Canon 5d, 50mm 1.2 lens for the entire session

What time of day was this shot?  We started around 5:30 p.m.

Can you share any post-processing techniques that were used when editing this shoot?  Very little.  I sharpened a touch and used curves but beyond that nothing really.  I definitely strive for very natural looking images.  Not to mention, these girls didn’t need an ounce of “touching up”. 🙂

What are your tips for photographing twins/sisters?  See if you can get a feel for their different personalities and roles in their relationship.  Try and capture that in the images during those in between moments.  For example, an eye roll or knowing smile…

What is your favorite thing about these photos?  The girls have stunning faces and I love their many expressions.  They are as smart as they are pretty, and I wanted that to come across as well.  Their exuberance for life I think is palpable and looking at them makes me very hopeful for the future.

What do you want this session to convey about these seniors and your photography style?  Natural is best.  These girls know who they are and they brought that to the session.  I like for people to look at images I’ve taken and say, “oh my gosh, that is so me. How did you do that?”

What is one tip you could share with other photographers who want to break into the senior market?  For 17-18 year olds, senior pictures are a BIG deal.  BIG! HUGE! Remembering that is my tip.  They (particularly girls) put a lot of pressure on themselves before the shoot, worrying about pretty much everything.  Give them LOTS of assurance that they look fantastic and be relaxed about things from your end.  Familiarize yourself with flattering poses for different body types.  Know how to use the sunlight to highlight and smooth out skin.  Oops, does that count for more than one? 🙂
