Beautiful warm light is an inspiration for many photographers.  And that is definitely the case for Jessica Velarde of Jessica Velarde Photography in Carmel, California.

This session showcases backlighting in the beautiful setting of Carmel Mission.  Check out what Jessica had to say about how she found the light and used it to her advantage.  And be sure to check out Jessica’s other work here.  Thanks for sharing Jessica!!

What was your inspiration for the photo shoot?

Lindsay had such a beautiful, eclectic style for the session. She was really the inspiration for it! I wanted the images to feel light, airy, natural, and carefree.
Where did this photo shoot take place?
The Carmel Mission in Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA.
Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot?
I gave my usual tips about wardrobe and encouraged her to be herself and have fun with what she brought! We also discussed what feel she wanted for the images and thought the Mission would be the perfect fit. It’s a gorgeous spot with lots of character.
What camera, lens and equipment were used for this shoot?
The entire session was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II and 50mm 1.2L Canon lens. My favorite combination!
What time of day were these taken?
Right at my ideal time for gorgeous backlight: about two hours before sunset.
The lighting is so warm.  How did you use the light to your advantage for this photo shoot?
I placed her in front of the sun for most of the session to achieve that gorgeous “halo” effect and capture that beautiful sunshine at its best. The tiled patio and stone walls of the mission served as great natural reflectors as well. Utilizing the surrounding surfaces for reflected light provided a soft, natural light on my subject from the front.
Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session?
I absolutely love Radlab by Totally Rad Actions. I used Adobe Lightroom for basic adjustments such as white balance and contrast, and then opened up each image in Photoshop and used some of my favorite Radlab “recipes” to give them a distinct style and make them pop.
What is your favorite thing about this session?
I love the combination of Lindsay’s style with the setting and light. It fit together so naturally.
What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style?
I would hope that these images portray Lindsay as the confident, beautiful girl that she is! Our session was fun, spontaneous, and full of life and light! She just shined in the setting we were in. My goal for every senior is that they would feel comfortable and true to themselves during the session. Those feelings result in beautiful, genuine images.
What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors?

Treat them like friends! I always find that a session turns out so much better when I make the effort to get to know my seniors and just “hang out” with them as the session progresses. You’ll both enjoy it even more that way.
