Typically most of the submissions we receive are done with all natural light.  But every now and then we get a submission that uses both natural light and other light sources.

Tricia Burns of Hayden Burns Photography used natural light, video light and off-camera flash for the photos below.  I love how they are all different and all so beautiful!!

Check out the photos below and read what Tricia had to say about this session!  Thanks for sharing Tricia!  You can check out more work by Tricia here.

What was your inspiration for the photo shoot? SHE was my inspiration! I always strive to capture the essence of the senior. We spoke in length before the shoot about the things that she loves and then looked through her outfits to determine a location.

Where did this photo shoot take place? EVERYWHERE! An old courthouse built in 1890, a bank parking garage, a gravel road with trees and fields on each side, and one of my favorites now, an abandoned masonic temple that has the best textured wall!  I am a very random photographer when it comes to locations. I am always looking for new places and we just happened onto a few new ones for this shoot!

Did you collaborate with this senior to come up with the clothing and/or concept for this shoot? I told her to bring several outfits and we would go through and choose the ones that would photograph best.

What camera, lens and equipment were used for this shoot? Nikon D700 and 80-200 2.8 lens.  A video light and an SB-800 for some OCF.

What time of day were these taken? My shoots last around 2-3 hours and this one was 3 hours before sunset.

Can you share any post-processing techniques used when editing this session? Basic adjustments were done in Lightroom. I LOVE Michelle Kane’s actions and use them faithfully on just about every session!

What is your favorite thing about this session? I have to say the senior herself.  Such a beautiful person inside and out! She’s one of those people who just doesn’t realize how beautiful she really is!

What do you want this session to convey about this senior and about your senior photography style? I wanted to offer her variety! From the very beginning of my business, my goal has always been to offer something different. With a very saturated market, we have to put ourselves in a position to offer variety and something not everyone else is doing. It helps you stand out. I am always pushing myself to look for new locations and learn new techniques. This senior was the first time I had ever used my OCF.

What is one tip you can share with other photographers regarding photographing seniors? Get to know your senior!! Be their friend! I always friend them on Facebook so I can get to know them a little bit prior to the session. I can also get a grasp of the type of personality they have by looking through their pictures and reading their statuses.
